Labradorite is a feldspar mineral with a natural iridescence and these beads have a distinctive blue shimmering effect. The geological type area for labradorite is Paul's Island near the town of Nain in Labrador, Canada.
Beads have been made in Bohemia since Roman times, although it wasn't until the 1550's that a major glass industry was founded in the cities of Jablonec, Stanovsko, and Bedrichov (modern Reichenberg) in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). During the 19th century, The Czech Republic developed new machines using a process of pressing molten glass into a heated mold and the Czechs became masters of pressed glass. Although Czech glass production suffered in the 20th Century after WWII, today the Czech Republic are again at forefront of the world bead market.
