Beads have been made in Bohemia since Roman times, although it wasn't until the 1550's that a major glass industry was founded in the cities of Jablonec, Stanovsko, and Bedrichov (modern Reichenberg) in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). These glassmakers were mostly cottage crafters making beads for use in larger jewellery factories.
Competition in glass production between the Czech Republic and Venice has always been fierce. However, during the industrial innovation of the 19th century The Czech Republic developed new machines using a process of pressing molten glass into a heated mold. Venice continued to concentrate on handmade glass beads, while the Czechs became masters of pressed glass. Although Czech glass production suffered in the 20th Century after WWII, today the Czech Republic are again at forefront of the world bead market.
